Moon Mantra or Chandra Mantra Meaning – Om Som Somaya Namah

Hindu Mantras

Chandra Dev, as a God, is characterized as a fair and youthful in appearance. Moreover, He is considered peaceful, wise and auspicious. He is also identified with the Vedic Lunar deity Soma. Also, He is associated with dew, and as such, is one of the gods of fertility.

In the „Purusha Sukta” hymn from the sacred Rigveda, it is mentioned that Chandra was born from the mind of the virat Purusha – „Chandrama manasojaatah”.

Moon is regarded to be a softer planet in Astrology and represents mind, emotions, satisfaction, or smell.

Chandra is also called „Lord of the Night” (Rajanipati) and „the one who illuminates the night” (Kshuparaka). As Soma, He governs over Monday (Somvar). In ancient Sanskrit, Chandra signifies „bright and shining”.

Iconography

He wears white and carries a mace in one hand and is seated on a lotus which is transported by a shining white chariot pulled by white horses.

Graha is the „cosmic influencer” on the sentient beings of mother Earth (Bhumidevi). The Navgraha are some of these important influencers. The Navgraha includes – Chandra, Surya, Budha, Mangala, Guru, Shani, Shukra, Rahu and Ketu.

The placement of the nine planets in the Hindu astrology points out the karmic influence on the behavior of the specific individual. It is considered that reciting daily peaceful mantras or even listening to them helps to get rid of negativity and spreads positive healing energy.

The day representing Moon (Chandra) is Monday. An afflicted Chandra (Moon) may mean personality disorders, emotional disturbances (negative emotions) and difficulties in relating to other people. More importantly, the Moon is particularly beneficial for the water sign Ascendants of Scorpio, Cancer and Pisces.
