Buddha Amitabha is a celestial Buddha characterized in the sacred text of the Mahayana school of Buddhism. He represents compassion and love, and he is pictured as being the rich, warm color of the setting sun.

He is the principal Buddha in the Pure Land sect, a branch of Buddhism practiced primarily in East Asia, while in Vajrayana Tantric Buddhism, Amitabha Buddha is known for his longevity feature and the aggregate of distinguishing and the deep awareness of individualities.

Amitabha Buddha is the head of the Lotus family. This family includes some of the most famous Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, including Avalokiteshvara (also known as Chenrezig), Padmasambhava, Goddess Tara, and the historical Buddha Siddhartha Gautama, Shakyamuni.

It is said that Buddha Amitayus was, many thousands of years ago, a monk by the name of Dharmakara. In some versions of the stories surrounding him, Dharmakara is characterized as one who was once the king.

The king is said to have discovered the spiritual Buddhist teachings through the Buddha, known as Lokesvararaja, and having reached an understanding of Buddhism, he renounced his throne. Hence, giving up the life of privilege and luxury. The monk, Dharmakara then become stable in his resolve to set out on his own pathway toward enlightenment so that he could ultimately become a Buddha himself.

Amitayus Buddha is commonly illustrated seated in a meditation posture with a kalasha (vase) in his hands, which contains amrita (the elixir of immortality) and leaves of the Ashoka tree. It symbolizes „a long life without shoka (the misery) of disease”. On top of the vase can be an alms bowl.
