What is the Meaning of Om Shanti Om Mantra?

Sanskrit Mantras

Om Shanti meaning:

There is a group of special peace mantras found in Vedic ancient texts, such as the Upanishads. At the end of each chapter from Upanishad, for instance, the word shanti (peace) is chanted 3 times, as a mantra.

This is to remove the three kinds of suffering – personal, atmospheric and external.

„Like many other Sanskrit mantras this one starts with the syllable “Om.” It is considered that Om (or Aum) is the sound of the Universe, the original sound of which all sounds come from.

We can see it corresponding to the white healing light, in which it can be found all the healing colors of the rainbow. In the Hindu tradition, the sacred sound Om is a word of respectful agreement and solemn affirmation.

The second part of this mantra, Shanti, signifies „Peace,” that simple. It has a beautiful sound and also a beautiful meaning.

This is interpreted as peace in the body, mind, and speech (our whole being) or as a desire for peace individually, universally and collectively.

This soothing mantra means peace for the all the human kind, peace for the universe, peace in all dimensions, peace for all nonliving and living beings (sentient beings), peace for each and every thing in this whole cosmic manifestation.

Chanting Peace mantra benefits:

Mantra weaves through your subconscious mind and starts to spread the light with each chant. Combining Om with Shanti gives the mantra a beautiful healing chant like quality and is a joy to repeat over and over again. Also, keep in mind, that in the preliminary stages of reciting, the practitioner experiences peace of mind, a clearing of consciousness, and relief from unwanted habits and drives.

Moreover, after some practice with this mantra, inner peace begins to come naturally, dedicate your mind and physical to more spiritual practice, and you will feel overcome by bliss and a great inner state of peace.

Working to apply awareness to the peace mantra helps focus the mind. Either way, once the mantra meditations session has ended, the mind falls into a beautiful, poignant stillness (at least, for a while).

Hindus not only pray for their group or for themselves, they pray and chant for every one (without exception) and every thing and that is what Vedas teach them to do. You can chant the mantra softly for personal meditation or loudly with your friends or family.
