This death-conquering mantra is considered extremely significant and powerful in the Hindu tradition. It is also known as the moksha mantra (moksha literally translates as liberation) of Lord Shiva and chanting of this mantra is said to create divine vibrations that heals.
Devotees of Lord Shiva further consider that this Sanskrit mantra evokes the Mahadeva Shiva within human beings and removes the fear of death (thanatophobia, another name for fear of death), liberating one from the cycle of death and rebirth (Samsara). Lord Shiva is acknowledged as ”tryambakam,” which translates as ”the three-eyed one,” due to the fact that his 3rd-eye (or ajna chakra) has been “opened” by the powers of profound meditation and penance.
More importantly, this healing mantra is connected with Rishi Vashishta – one of the Saptarishis. He is mentioned as the son of MitraVaruna and Urvasi. Sage Vashishta is the author of Mandala 7 in Rigveda (sacred Vedic Sanskrit hymns). He in his possession had the divine cow Kamadhenu who could grant his owner with any wish.
