Hayagriva Mantra lyrics in Sanskrit:
“Om Vaniswaraya Vidmahe
Haya Greevaya Dheemahe
Thanno Hayagreeva Prachodayath”
Mantra translation in English:
„I worship Lord Hayagriva, who is the very form of wisdom, pure as a crystal, and who is the support of all wisdom.”
Lord Hayagreeva is a horse faced aspect of Vishnu, the Supreme God. Hayagreeva is worshiped as the God of learning, wisdom, and knowledge, with a human body and a horse’s head, brilliant white in color, with white garments and seated on a white lotus.
There are a few legends about the origin of Lord Hayagreeva. It is known that he killed as asura (demon) called Hayagreeva who had a horse’s head.
Some consider Him to be one of the Dashavataras of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Lord Hayagreeva along with Lord Krishna, Lord Rama, and Lord Narasimha is considered to be an influential avatar of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
People who follow Vaishnavism consider that Lord Hayagreeva is the God of knowledge. Hayagreeva is also called as „Hayasirsa”. Hayasirsa signifies: „haya – Horse”, „sirsa – Head”.
Traditionally, He is worshiped for all learning ventures, and there is a famous temple dedicated to this deity in Chettipunyam village close to Chennai.
He is frequently worshiped in a solitary pose of meditation, as in the Thiruvanthipuram temple. This aspect is known as Yoga-Hayagriva. However, Lord Hayagreeva is most usually worshiped and adored along with his consort Goddess Lakshmi and is known as Lakshmi-Hayagriva. He in this aspect is the presiding deity of Mysore’s Parakala Mutt, a significant Sri Vaishnavism monastic institution.
