Agni Mantra lyrics in Sanskrit:
„Om Vaishvanaraya Vidmahe
Lalelaya Dhimahi
Tanno Agnih Prachodayat.”
Agni is the Vedic god of fire and the conveyor of sacrifices to the Gods. He is the messenger of the gods, the acceptor of sacrifice. He is also considered the god of divine knowledge, who leads man to the gods. He was one of the most important of the Vedic gods.
He is known to be the fire of the sun, in the lightening bolt, and in the smoke column which holds up the heavens. The stars glitter from his flame.
He was so important to the ancient Indians that 200 sacred hymns in the Rig Veda are addressed to him, and 8 of its 10 books start with praises dedicated to the God of Fire.
The word „agni” is Sanskrit for “fire”, associate with Latin ”ignis” (the root of English ignite). He has 3 forms: „lightning”, „fire” and the „Sun”.
He is closely linked with Indra (the leader of the Devas), and is sometimes said to be his twin brother. Prthivi and Thus Dyaus Pita are named as 2 of his parents. He is also said to be the son of 10 mothers who are all sisters; these are the 10 fingers of man.
Another story tells that he consumed his parents when he was born, as they could not provide for him; this is symbolic of the fire born when 2 sticks are rubbed together which quickly are burned up by it.
He may have originally been the same as Apam Napat, (according to Rig Veda is the supreme god of creation), who is also sometimes portrayed as fire arising from water.
